Skip Barber Formula iRacing Series Race Preview: Lime Rock Park

The penultimate round of the Skip Barber Formula iRacing Series in 2024 kicks off on Thursday night at Lime Rock Park. After Hot Lap Qualifying via Time Attack from August 9th to the 11th, 20 drivers have qualified for their shot to contend for more than $500,000 in prizes and the opportunity to run in the real-world Skip Barber Formula Race Series.

Last Race: At Road America one week ago, Victor Miranda managed to keep his streak alive of winning one of the two races every week in the season so far. Miranda split victories with Matt J Caruana, but both races came down to photo finishes with Caruana involved. Caruana’s opponent in the opening race was Kody Deith, a winner back at Circuit of the Americas. Miranda finished a season-low fourth place. In the second race, Miranda managed to get in position to strike, and at the end of this one, was able to squeeze out victory by a nose.

Last Year: In the 2023 competition, Lime Rock Park opened the Skip Barber Formula iRacing Series season. Harley Haughton was the first to visit victory lane, defeating eventual champion Diogo Pinto in the opening race. The second race, however, saw Sebastian Wheldon get up on the wheel, going from third to first around Haughton and Pinto for his first win of the season.

Track Facts: Opened in 1957, Connecticut’s Lime Rock Park has been a staple of American road racing across countless sports car and open-wheel sanctioning bodies. At 1.53-miles in length, the seven-turn, clockwise circuit begins with a long frontstretch into the right-handed corner nicknamed Big Bend. It then continues into the Esses and No Name Straight, and wraps up with the challenging Downhill right-hander. Skip Barber is a part of the ownership group at the track.

Next Race: Following Lime Rock, the Skip Barber Formula iRacing Series finishes the 2024 season with a final battle at Virginia International Raceway. This Hot Lap Qualifier is active from Friday, September 6th at 12 a.m. ET to Sunday, September 8th at 11:59 p.m. ET. The entry fee for each Hot Lap Qualifier is $20, and the top 20 drivers on the Time Attack leaderboard will be invited to run each race. They’ll also get to take part in an open test with Skip Barber Racing School instructors on hand to provide feedback. The main event will run on Thursday, September 12th.

About the Series: The Skip Barber Formula iRacing Series is where future stars of real-world motorsport prove themselves in the virtual one. Using the iRacing Formula iR-04, drivers take part in an open qualifier each week, and the top racers are selected to compete on Thursday nights.

The top three finishers in 2024 Skip Barber Formula iRacing Series points will be invited to compete in a shootout at VIR later this year, where they’ll receive a 3 Day Racing School and have exclusive access to Skip Barber Racing School training facilities and coaching as they battle for a full-season seat in the 2025 Skip Barber Formula Race Series. In addition, 1 Day Racing School certificates will be given to the Hard Charger in each race, as well as fourth and fifth in the final standings, and all drivers who qualify for any given race will receive a one-time $200 credit to Skip Barber Racing School.
