For this week of the iRacing Staff Member highlight series, we’ve got another member of our incredible in-house broadcast team. Whether he’s working the soundboard in the broadcast control room, or managing the parts and pieces that will go into making those broadcasts shine outside of it, Sean Ambrose is one of the main pieces of making those shows happen.

Here’s more about iRacing’s Media Producer, Sean Ambrose.

  • Who are you, and what is your job title at iRacing?

Sean Ambrose, iRacing Media Producer and Broadcaster, and now also assisting our sound team with audio recordings for the iRacing sim.

  • How long have you been working at iRacing?

I’ll be celebrating my three-year anniversary at iRacing on September 7th.

  • What got you interested in working for iRacing?

It’s a great story, it all started with a call from iRacing’s own Alex Horn! I had never dreamed, or even thought, of working for iRacing. The opportunity literally fell from the sky while I was on a hike in the San Bernardino mountains.

  • What does your job entail, from daily tasks to larger projects?

It’s a pretty wide range of tasks and duties. My top priority is broadcasting all of the amazing sim racing championships and events here at iRacing. That being said, there are a lot of assets to prepare for those shows.

These include pre-recorded video roll, on-screen graphics, video vignettes, creating and compiling paint packs for the various series we cover, scheduling events for our YouTube, Twitch and Facebook channels, recording statistical data for said channels and a continuing list of pre-broadcast and post-broadcast activities.

When we’re live, I can usually be found working as sound engineer, video replay operator, graphics operator, technical director and director. Not all at one time, but I can be found at one of these stations during our broadcasts.

Sean doing some sound captures on the Mini Stock at Stafford!

Recently I’ve started assisting Kevin Iannarelli, who specializes in scanning and sound recording, by going to tracks and recording some of the vehicles we have in our sim.

Most recently, I’ve traveled to WeatherTech Laguna Seca Raceway to record the “Dark Horse” Mustang GT3, Canadian Tire Motorsports Park for the McLaren 720s, and Stafford Motor Speedway a couple of weeks ago for the all-new Mini Stock, and maybe another car or two.

As a former sound engineer in my past life in the music business, the new opportunity to work with Aussie Greg Hill and his team is one I could have never imagined or hoped for either.

  • Are there any projects you’ve worked on that stand out above any others? Something you are proud of?

Both Mosport and Laguna Seca were bucket list tracks for me, on a personal level, and rank right up there as the most exciting projects I’ve had an opportunity to work on.

Two more of the cars that Sean has helped record in recent months!

I will say though, it’s been an absolute honor and privilege to be part of the last four eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series Championship race broadcasts. I worked my first one as a third-party contractor and the remaining three as an employee for iRacing. This will be year number five.

Two things I’m pretty proud of are having my name in the AI roster, and getting to hear my sound work in the sim. It’s really the coolest thing I’ve ever contributed to.

  • Are there any future projects that you can’t wait to jump on?

I wish I could specifically name them, but then I would have to… you know. But yes, there are some sound trips planned for the future that I’ll get to be part of and they will take me to some places I’ve never had the opportunity to visit. In addition, we have some exciting new series this fall that will keep me busy in the broadcasting control room.

  • What are some of your favorite car and track combinations on iRacing to participate in?

The answer to this will always be NASCAR Cup cars at Talladega Superspeedway! God Bless Mitchell Qualls!

I also enjoy taking the Legends cars onto most any Road Course, and Mazda Global MX-5’s on the Daytona Road Course.

  • Are there any other video games, racing or not, that you enjoy playing currently?

ExoCross currently has my attention. It’s a super fun, off-road space-truckin’ experience.

  • Outside of iRacing, what other hobbies do you enjoy?

I love getting out for a hike, any time, any place! Homesteading, taking care of our property and chickens with my lovely wife. Sunday trips to the Rietta Flea Market, which is one of New England’s largest.

  • What are some of your goals you hope to achieve, either at work or outside of it?

At my age, goals have started to run out. I’m sincerely happy and grateful for the opportunity I was given at iRacing.

I would say there are two or three goals left:

  1. Still be here at iRacing until they show me the exit.
  2. Find ways to keep making contributions to the sim through my work here.
  3. Live out the rest of our lives peacefully here in New England.

A bonus fourth would be to get Riverhead Raceway on iRacing!

Sean’s dad, Junior Ambrose, and a younger Sean himself (on top of the car in first picture, left side of second picture)

  • Anything else we should know about you?

Daddy was a race car driver from Riverhead, New York, so I grew up at race tracks. I was a “pit brat” with Steve Park and Tommy Baldwin Jr.

I’m about to be a grandfather for the first time. I’ve also worked in the music industry for over 35 years, in backline production and artist management.

One last thing… I’m left handed!
