Gade Goes Back-to-Back in Skip Barber Formula iRacing Series Action From Road America
April 18th, 2022 by Chris Leone
For the second time in the Skip Barber Formula iRacing Series season, Mikkel Gade swept both rounds of an event in Sunday’s action from Road America. After battling with polesitter Elvis Rankin, Gade would hold off Deagen Fairclough and Nicolas Mateo for the win in the first feature, before leading every lap of the second race to lock in his fifth and sixth wins of the season.
The Skip Barber Formula iRacing Series closely mirrors the real-world Skip Barber Formula Race Series in vehicle formula and racing circuits, with the added caveat that the top performers in the virtual series earn racing opportunities in the real one. Each week, a new slate of 20 drivers qualifies their way into the next race round, receiving coaching from Skip Barber Racing School instructors before taking to the track for a pair of 15-minute timed races. The champion at the end of the six-week series earns a full-season ride in the Skip Barber Formula Race Series, and more than $500,000 worth of prizes is on the line overall.
Rankin would post the fastest qualifying lap with a 2:08.362, with Michael Janney and Gade qualifying second and third and the top 10 all within a second of Rankin’s top time. That speed would serve him well after getting knocked back to 11th in the first race, as he carved back through the field to get to third in the second. Bruno F Carneiro would hold Rankin off by .022 seconds for second place, while Fairclough and Mateo would be separated by just .002 seconds for fourth and fifth in the same pack.
Gade’s five race wins across five doubleheader events have him in control of the championship, with a 207-179 advantage over Rankin with each driver’s worst two events already dropped. Mateo is third, just one point back of Rankin, while Fairclough (163 points) and Janney (150) complete the top five. However, with a maximum of 70 points on the line per event,
