eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series Race Preview: Monza
April 10th, 2023 by Chris Leone
The eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series makes history once again on Tuesday night, leaving the United States for the first time with a visit to Autodromo Nazionale Monza. As always, race coverage begins at 9 p.m. ET at eNASCAR.com/live and across iRacing social media channels, while Countdown to Green will kick off at 8:30 p.m. ET to preview the action.
Last Race: It was a dominant run for Joe Gibbs Racing driver Bobby Zalenski at Richmond Raceway, as the eNASCAR Playoffs and Championship 4 regular took his first step towards returning to this year’s postseason with his first win of the year. Zalenski led 95 of 130 laps, returning to the point on Lap 73 and never looking back despite a caution-heavy middle portion of the race.
Zalenski put nearly a second on JR Motorsports driver and Milwaukee winner Michael Conti in the final 10-lap dash to the finish, while Rise Esports driver Jimmy Mullis finished third while carrying the old Chaos Crew colors from Rise’s days as Richmond Raceway eSports. 2020 series champion Nick Ottinger finished fourth for William Byron eSports to carry a three-point lead on Conti into Monza.
Last Year: While Monza wasn’t on last year’s schedule, there were two road courses in the 2022 campaign, both in the regular season. Steven Wilson won at Road America, while Mitchell deJong came out on top at Watkins Glen.
Track Facts: The oldest purpose-built racing circuit in Europe, Autodromo Nazionale Monza opened in 1922. It’s hosted the Italian Grand Prix for more than 70 years, as well as countless other open-wheel, sports car, and motorcycle racing series. Monza’s primary Grand Prix layout is one of the fastest in the sport, and eNASCAR will make it even faster by running the track without the Prima and Seconda Variante chicanes that were added before Curva Biassono and Curva di Lesmo.
Next Up: Following Monza, the eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series will return to Talladega Raceway on Tuesday, April 18 at 9 p.m. ET. Talladega marks yet another first in series history, as it’ll see all 40 drivers racing with the same fixed setup. All three of this year’s back-to-back race weeks will see fixed setups in the second race, evening the playing field and keeping drivers fresh in the chase for the championship.
