Cardwell Avenges Last Year’s Loss, Wins iRacing World of Outlaws Carquest Sprint Car Round at Eldora
December 6th, 2022 by Chris Leone
Last winter, Hayden Cardwell’s shot at winning the iRacing World of Outlaws Carquest Sprint Car Series round at Eldora Speedway ended with a James Edens pass on the final lap. There was no such drama this time around, as Cardwell built a lead of more than a second and a half on Volusia winner Alex Bergeron to take the victory as the last 25 laps of the race ran caution-free.
Top qualifier Braden Eyler, Bergeron, Aiden Bierlein, and Tyler Schell won the four heat races, while Shawn English and Blake Giglio raced their way in through the B and C mains. Eyler would only hold the lead for a handful of laps off the start, as Bergeron quickly made his move after the restart for an early caution when Bierlein got the worst of a check-up ahead of him. Another yellow flag would fly just a few laps later, when Adam Elby clipped the wall and bounced back down into Edens, who went from the defending race winner to the only driver to finish off the lead lap in the feature.
But just as Bergeron got Eyler for the lead in the first few laps off the first restart, Cardwell would do the same to Bergeron off the second. After a handful of laps of trading the top spot in the corners, Cardwell would assert the spot for good on Lap 14 and continue building his lead from there as Bergeron and Eyler battled for second. Bergeron would make the decisive pass on Lap 22, and Eyler would hold third until both Kendal Tucker and JD Brown would get by him with two to go.
