AMX Esports Championship Blends Real, Sim Racers With Influencers at Mix of Arena and Virtual Events
June 30th, 2021 by Chris Leone
Based in South Korea, the AMX Esports Championship presents one of the most unique challenges on iRacing. This unique 18-race season pits 20 teams of three drivers each against one another in BMW GT cars on a diverse mix of global tracks, ranging from the high-speed ovals of Daytona and Indianapolis to iconic road courses like Spa and Nurburgring and city streets like Long Beach.
Most interesting of all, though, is the split of each team’s three drivers. A devoted sim racer anchors each team, but real-world licensed drivers and celebrity influencers comprise the second and third slots. Each racer competes only against other drivers in their respective category, with each round alternating between one of the three categories and a mix of both virtual and in-person racing for each group. Each result counts towards a team championship as all three drivers pool together their points for the chance at the grand prize of one Bitcoin.
The first third of the season wrapped up last Thursday with a real-world event bringing all three divisions together to compete in person at the Afreeca Coliseum in Seoul. There, the DCT Racing and DCT eRacing teams posted strong enough performances to extend their hold on the top two spots in the championship, wrapping up the race with a 1-2 at Spa in the BMW M8 GTE. They now have 93 and 89 points, respectively, with AtlasBX E-Sports Team sitting in third with 82 and well within striking distance.
The next three weeks will see the series return to virtual competition on Tuesdays, with the sim racers, influencers, and real racers competing in that order. They’ll all return to Afreeca Coliseum on July 27, while the process will repeat again on Thursdays in August before the deciding rounds take place on August 26.
